So in case you’ve been living under a ginormous rock, I would like to inform you that the skiing up at Mad River Glen is freakin’ awesome right now. We got 16 inches of glorious white love in the Ground Hog Day Storm (some say more…) and then had a bluebird day to eat it all up. And despite watching skiers cut up the pow like it was a video game, the skiing is STILL freakin’ awesome! There are very few surprises in them thar hills and when you find one, it’s not the ‘oh crap, I just hooked a tip and I’m about to eat it’ kind of surprise. No, they are more religious-like, as if you can hear the heavens melodiously singing “Aaaahhh!” as you ski through them. *Sigh* Yes, this snow is holding up really nicely and there’s snow in the forecast on Saturday, and Sunday, and Monday… “Aaaahhh!”
Oh yeah, and there are a boat load of other reasons to be here this weekend too!
Saturday
- As if you needed another reason to ride the Single Chair, the Triple Crown kicks off the 2011 bid with the Unconventional Terrain Competition. Taking place on Lift Line for your viewing pleasure, watch competitors test their mettle against the steeps, the trees and the cliffs. UPDATE: Registration is SOLD OUT! The comp is now starting at 10am.
- For the nature-lovers in the crowd, The Naturalist program offers the All about Bears Snowshoe Hike! Get a tour of mountain and see signs of bear activity all over! Bears love ski areas! Don’t believe me? Check out this video – skip to 52 seconds.
- The General Stark’s Pub pulls a double, starting with a Bob Marley Tribute Afternoon! Ya mon. In celebration of the birth of a Legend [yes, yes... we know his birthday was actually the 6th, but whatever,] there will be Jamaican food & drink specials and we’ll have an iree playlist of all yer favorite Bob, mon. So channel your inner-rastafarian and come join us for an early beer. Bonus points if you look the part! Click here to brush up on your rasta-lingo.
- For the second act, the Pub will shift gears and welcome local phavorites: Phineas Gage! Four part harmony, beautiful acoustics, songs you know and love, and songs you’ve never heard before but already love – these guys are as freakin’ awesome as the skiing is right now!
Sunday
- The USSMA Randonee Rally Race tests competitors’ mettle in both their downhill and uphill capacities, testing their skiing, their skinning and their savvy, the Randonee Rally Race starts at MRG and ends over at Sugarbush. You can register for this event by clicking here. As evidenced by the UTC selling out, I suggest registering sooner than later.
- The SUPERBOWL! Ok, since the Super Bowl doesn’t really start until 6:30, we will only have the excessive pre-game TV coverage on our 55 incher. But we would love you to stick around for a bevvy or two since you are bound to earn them on the hill. You can still sport your Green and Yellow, or Yellow and Black. Or White, Red and Blue if you’re the nay-sayin’ type…
So there you have it:
Killer events during the day,
Killer music in the pub apres.
Killer weekend at MRG, Yay!
Ski ya this weekend!
